KEY ASPECT Arterial Hypertension (High blood pressure)

High blood pressure is characterised by two values: the higher systolic value which marks the contraction of your heart, and the lower diastolic value, which marks the relaxation of your heart. Arterial hypertension is a permanently high blood pressure. An example for a normal blood pressure is 130/80 mmHg.

Primary and secondary hypertension

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), for an adult in the European Union values over 140 mmHg systolic and over 90 mmHg diastolic count as increased and in need of immediate treatment. Various causes are being discussed for the most prevalent primary (essential) hypertension. Among them are genetic predisposition, environmental influences, overweight and stress.

Quite different from primary hypertension is secondary hypertension, which mainly occurs at an early age and can also be caused by hormonal diseases (e.g. of the thyroid or the adrenal gland) or organic diseases (kidney diseases).

High blood pressure that is not at all or inadequately treated can cause serious subsequent damage to the heart, kidneys, blood vessels, eyes, and brain. It is the primary risk factor for cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack, which are the reason for almost every other death and therefore the most common causes of death in Germany. Hence early and reliable diagnosis as well as adequate therapy of arterial hypertension represents important pillars of cardiology. In the course of an early conservative therapy, first the risk factors should be reduced or even completely eliminated (e.g. no smoking, stress reduction).
